たける【長ける･闌ける】

1 〔長じている〕 excel 《in…》; be proficient [well versed, at home, well up] 《in…》; be an expert 《in…》; be a master [mistress] 《of…》.

●世故に長けている be worldly-wise; be well versed in the ways of the world

・世故に長けた人 a person of the world

・奸知に長けている be cunning; be crafty; be wily; be a sly old fox

・…に長けている have a good knowledge of 《music》.

2 〔老いる〕 grow old; advance in life.

●齢(_よわい)長けて後 in one's advanced [declining] years.

3 〔盛りを過ぎる〕 be advanced; be well on; ripen.

●春たけるにつれて as spring advances

・秋もたけた. Autumn has ripened [is well on, is well advanced].

・夜がたけるまで till the night is far advanced; into the depth of night

・日[年]がたけた. The day [year] is drawing to a [its] close.

4 〔高くのぼる〕 rise high.
